The United States to This introductory survey course, lasting one semester, taught primarily through lectures, focuses primarily upon late eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century US history.
It seeks to place the United States in the broader international context. Students are introduced to some basic documentary sources. The United States Since This introductory survey course, lasting one semester, taught primarily through lectures, focuses upon the development of the United States as a modern state and an international power.
This seminar course focuses upon the origins and development of the Cold War. It is a documents-based course, in which students are expected to deliver at least one seminar presentation discussing a particular Cold War document and its significance, as well as writing a substantial term paper.
The World Wars Through Documents. This seminar course is designed to introduce students to some of the skills needed to understand how documents of various kinds are created and to evaluate them as historical sources. The teaching materials for this course draw heavily upon essays discussing different types of documents and their reliability as source material that I prepared for the documents volumes of World War I: A Student Encyclopedia, and World War II: A Student Encyclopedia.
Each week, the course focuses upon a different kind of document. Each student is expected to take one particular document and prepare a class presentation and term paper on it, evaluating that particular document as a historical source, effectively producing their own essays on these documents. The objective is to teach students the ability to assess sources, rather than simply accepting them at face value. History Through Film. This course looks at the manner in which film has portrayed events in history.
It considers the degree to which film can enhance or be detrimental to our understanding of history and the manner in which films themselves are the product of a particular historical time and place, and can indeed be highly political documents. Students may expect to gain some appreciation, not just of the films themselves, but also of the degree to which any movie is the product of a certain historical period and reflects its values and preoccupations.
The theme of this course has varied. At different times, it has focused upon depictions of World War I and upon race relations in the United States.
Colleagues who have taught it when I was on leave have also chosen their own, sometimes very different, focus. Directed Readings in History On several occasions, I have supervised individual undergraduate students in a directed readings course. These are usually quite intensive courses, but can be very satisfying to supervise. Undergraduate Dissertation I have supervised several undergraduate dissertations, and am often asked to be a second reader in assessing these. These are normally year-long undertakings.
If asked to supervise an undergraduate dissertation, I try to ensure that the student defines the subject and how it should be approached as early as possible, has a coherent and systematic study plan for the entire year, and makes steady progress throughout the year. Many students who do an undergraduate dissertation proceed to postgraduate study.
It is therefore important that they should obtain training in how to organize and undertake a substantial piece of research, which may well be their first exposure to actual archival research. Both are rather individual courses that I developed myself, trying to use materials and ideas that I found personally interesting and hoped students would too. The Cold War is also a course that gives students a great deal of scope for argument, debate, and discussion, and the opportunity if they wish to develop their own ideas.
Some produce outstanding term papers, exploring topics that interest and engage them. The survey courses on United States history can be more of a challenge, especially when many of the incoming students have little or no existing knowledge of the subject.
Here the task is to develop coherent themes, rather than simply conveying information. My own teaching style developed substantially during my time at the University of Hong Kong.
When I began, I was extremely nervous and stuck very closely to a written text. Over time, I found that, although preparation is important, a more informal and spontaneous teaching style is usually more effective than a totally structured approach. I have come to believe it is more important to teach students how to ask questions, understand and assess conflicting interpretations, evaluate evidence, and think for themselves, than it is to try to provide all the answers.
They also need to appreciate that all historical works are produced by human beings, who cannot attain total objectivity but are quite inevitably affected by their own particular background, upbringing, and circumstances. I am not the only student who says so.
And I am lucky to have taken three courses by you, which is the most courses I have taken from one teacher. In a department known for its high teaching standards, my teaching generally receives evaluations as good or better than the departmental average.
