Just audio from movies and music on my hard drive. How can I solve this? Which driver did you install? Creative's or the OSS driver? Just wanted to confirm that I was able to install the Creative drivers following the procedures in the first post on Ubuntu 9. I'm having the same problem with Jaunty x Also, there is no sound in games. You'll need to install the flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound package. Nullhead, this might be good to mention in the instructions.

WOOT kthxbye. Any suggestions for an x64 solution to this? I've packaged the X-Fi Linux drivers 1. Prerequisites: Install dkms and build-essential Tested on: Ubuntu 9. Upon installation of 9. But audio within MythTV still didn't work Thanks for the help. Good luck! It might be worth giving it a try, if for no other reason than to remove lack of the package from consideration when trouble-shooting your sound problem If you notice any postings that recommend this library to be installed, please reply to the post and point them to this thread, or the bug report linked.

The more people that are aware of this issue the better. Well Honestly, I don't know if it's a good idea or not. The last time I tested, was 8. From this guide, it sounds as if he knows some other way to get sound working. For now, I think you should ask him about flash support then. I haven't been testing on the new release yet, so I can't really say what's good or bad at this point.

Good instructions mate, got my X-fi running in Jaunty. Hey, creative released the final version of their x-fi driver! It works without configuring anything else! When you done that, execute these two commands in terminal as root: sudo make sudo make install Sound should work after you install it! Nice, thanks for clearing that up mate, I've just dual booted and was unsure on how to install!

Works though, well done guys! Speakers are a bit crackly, which they aren't in XP, I suppose it's a small sacrifice as opposed to not having sound at all heh. I'm having the same problem as Frodo Everything works great on a new Jaunty x64 install except YouTube and I can't get the recommended package to fix it either. Any other recommendations for a work-around? I was hoping to finally replace Windows as my primary OS with this update but no Internet videos kinda kills that idea. Nullhead, a couple of suggestions with regard to the new information that you've added to the instructions in the first posting to this thread - There are reports of Creative's driver working on the new shiny Ubuntu 9.

I've not tested this myself, but don't let that stop you. To install it: sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound - as I've reported previously, the need for «flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound» doesn't seem to be absolute ; I for one have no problems getting sound when playing YouTube videos on my bit Jaunty box without it. It might also be worthwhile pointing out that «sudo apt-get» method won't work on bit machines, as a bit version is not found in the repositories Well, I finally got around to trying all this but made the move to Jaunty first.

Also, the sound quality is much better than with the OSS driver. Still need to check how things work with Wine, but will let you know what happens on that end. Cheers for the excellent thread! But in windows he has to activate this feature. Is it possible to do on ubuntu or is it jsut to forget it? Only windows drivers support this feature. But it's not worth it anyway. It's a much better sound filter than those made in earlier days but still I found it to be nice for the first two minutes.

But in tracks with lots of dynamics or proper depth it sounds horribly artificial. It really depends with what you're listening to it. There are some minor issues with Skype and Ventrilo Wine. People listening to me report some sort of feedback echo, i. It's not feedback from my speakers to my microphone as I'm using a headset. Does anyone have setup tips that might solve this? Still need to try that one. Lack of sound is one of the few things keeping me from switching back to Ubuntu Upgraded to 9.

I'll test today if my crappy X-fi wannabe card that seems to be actualy-based-on-that-earlier-creative card works with this. Im getting sick and tired of always going to the back of my computer and switch from Integrated soundcard to X-Fi ports when i boot to XP and vice versa on Linux.

Dmrazor, you don't mention whether your using bit or bit Jaunty, but I presume that you're using the same version of Skype that I do, namely, 2. My problem is that on my HP Pavilion d How did you get your headset to work aside from the echo problem, which in this context strikes me as relatively minor? Thank you! This guide worked perfectly on my fresh install of 9.

EDIT: I've noticed you tried to compile it as regular user which propably won't work at all. As I remember correctly I had this error, too. Hello, I followed the instructions on the first page, but ran into problems when apt-get couldn't find the right packages: flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound and linux-headers I continued as the next steps created the file.

I used oss-linux Once finished, I rebooted and then typed "soundon" to start OSS. My system hangs every time I do that. No mouse, keyboard, nothing. I have to pull the power chord. I've already purged and re-installed OSS. I did all the optional steps in that guide as well.

I also tried asticanzano's method. Today was the day for a kernel update from 2. To my surprise, however, when all was done, while sound was working perfectly on websites like YouTube or that of certain newspapers, it didn't work with any of the music or video files I have stored on my Jaunty setup. OK, I thought, re-install everything from the very beginning, but alas, no joy - I still fail to get any sound on my music or video files.

Any suggestions as to what is going wrong here and. Maybe you need to compile as root. This is what I see on a terminal my translations from the Swedish in square brackets [] : Any suggestions as to what is going wrong here and. Thanks for your speedy reply, asticinzano!

Now both files from websites like YouTube and my own music and video files are playing perfectly! I suppose the main lesson to be learned from all this is not to panic - but in any event, all's well that ends well! Henri I'm using 32 bits Jaunty, with that same version of Skype. It started working for me when I set all to "pulse", and I'm currently checking if sound improves i.

Greetz, Raz. I am having a problem. Anyone know why? Finally the relief we've been waiting for! Takashi Iwai, who works for Novell, and the guy who made the first X-Fi driver, has contacted Creative and has made a new driver for Alsa!

This driver will be in the next kernel release, 2. This makes me very happy! When the next kernel releases, I hope to be building it and testing in on a fresh install of Ubuntu 9. I might even test it on Ubuntu 8. This is indeed splendid news, Nullhead ; thanks for the headsup! I wonder if the Ubuntu developers will make the 2.

Looking forward in any event to your report! I am getting no sound at all. I logged into youtube and no sound. Umm, odd thing. I loaded Pidgen, and when a friend came on, it started playing sound. Any reason why I am only getting sound in Pidgen?

The start up sound did not work. That would be most appreciated, as I will probably need the Source package to dovetail it into a customized Kernel 2. Great news, Nullhead! BTW, you don't have to wait for kernel 2. I just tried it and it seems to work just fine. No front-panel support yet though Can't test it, because I have no surround setup.

I tried and tried to get my X-Fi working in 8. Tried the procedure on 9. I just upgraded from 8. Anyone has an idea how to solve this? Now that I changed the menu. I had a look myself, and fixed the compilation errors. The sound now works. I added the following lines below the include statements near the beginning of cthw20k1.

I now regret that I didn't try this in 8. For what it's worth: While this has been a long and dirty mess, the good news is that as of today there is a merge-able version of the Creative X-Fi driver for ALSA. Takashi will be merging this into the mainline ALSA code-base soon so that it will appear in the next Linux kernel, which will be Linux 2. Note: the current kernel for karmic is 2. I revised my XFI You should remove previous XFi Drivers prior to installing this one.

If you used my installer: sudo dkms remove -m xfi -v 1. Tested on: Ubuntu Jaunty 9. Hopefully, one of these days I'm going to learn to accept the adage that if it works, don't change it - trying to get Skype to function on my setup, I managed to inadvertently lose all sound! Alas, no joy - not a peep from Pachelbel's «Canon in D major» do I hear. I don't quite understand the above warning especially the part about it being «ignored in a future release»?!! If so, what exactly should I do?

Or is there something else I'm missing in the labour of Sisyphos that is keeping the X-Fi driver working properly? Grateful for suggestions!

I tried following this one, still didn't get it to even make a blip of sound. I started my own thread as I didn't want to add so much to this already lengthy thread LOL! Maybe someone could wonder over to my thread and help me find some sound here. Not trying to hijack, but I'm at my witts end now LoL. But not altogether. Is it part of some package, if so what is it called? This is a script that you're running. It will be with the package you downloaded for alsa's unstable git tree.

Also, the name of it is just "configure". I've been messing with mine ALL day.. This is the only thing I've got to change.. I don't think it's right as any test with alsa just locks the sound properties screen. Also, trying to play a music file ends up in totem all but locking up. Still no sounds. Any idea? I'm wishing for sound every bit! Have I overlook something, I have tried the sound prefers on virtual every setting that I find, but sound, Is there any other software that I should have installed??

Sorry if somebody already asked this. I read about 20 of the 39 pages and didn't see it. First off I'm very new to Ubuntu. Thanks to everybody for the great info, this place has really helped me out a ton. My question is will these creative drivers work with the front panel for my fatality x-fi.

I'm trying to build a multimedia box for my home theater and being able to use the remote and front panel would be great. Should i try it with ubuntu or just go ahead with a windows install? Like I said I'm pretty new still and still getting used to it, for a noob would it just be easier to go with what is familiar and maybe someday when I understand more to attempt it, or just jump right in and hope I can get it up and running?

I really am loving ubuntu but I really love the use of the remote. I honestly would use windows. Creative's drivers will not provide the support you desire. They do not work with the frond panel yet. There are, however, drivers in the making that show great potential. It's very possible to see front panel support within a couple of months. My wild guess would you still have onboard sound activated.

Other than that, which Ubuntu version do you use? I've heard ctxfi doesn't compile properly on 8. Tried this Lots sucessful looking commands scroll up the screen. Hi asticinzano, thanks for your comment. I have the 9. The borad does have an onboard system, but I through I had disabled that. Is there a guide to this type off subject somewhere. Have you checked your sound mixer if it shows something like "X-Fi Alsa Mixer"?

It seems ctxfi is loaded correctly so far. I have followed the tutorial and it seemed to have worked, yet I don't have any sound. Running Kernel 9.

It is full-duplex but at least in MS Windows cannot play back several sources at once. Boards using AudioPCI tech are usually easily identifiable by the board design and the chip size because they all look quite similar. Analogue interfacing is done by a codec chip, which runs at a fixed sampling frequency of 44 Ensoniq Audio PCI or 48 kHz Creative's versions. ISA soundcards had not resampled but switched between different time bases.

When the Sound Blaster Live! The Live! All members of the SB Live! For game titles, EAX 1. The EMU10K1 provided high-quality voice sample-based synthesizer a. The Gold highlighted many features aimed at music composition; ease-of-use plug-and-play for musicians , realtime loopback-recording of the MIDI-synthesizer with full freedom of Soundfonts, and environmental effects such as reverb, etc.

The mainstream model was the Sound Blaster Live! Later versions of the Live! Creative also released a Sound Blaster Live! Player edition, which is identical to the regular Sound Blaster Live! It is capable of most of the Live! The card's circuit layout is somewhat simpler than that of the Live! The Audigy was controversially advertised as a bit sound card. In addition, Audigy 2 supported up to 6. It also featured built-in Dolby Digital EX 6.

The Audigy 2 line were the first sound cards to receive THX certification. There were a few slight printed circuit board modifications and 7. Other than a breakout box , it has no distinguishable difference from the Audigy 2 ZS. The Audigy 4 Pro is not to be confused with the Audigy 4 Value which contains lower quality DACs and does not have golden plated jacks. The Audigy 4 Value is more in line with the Audigy 2 Value series. The Audigy 4 had a shorter life span than its predecessors, due to the short window between it and the next-generation Sound Blaster X-Fi.

The computational power of this processor, i. This release also included the bit crystallizer, which is intended to pronounce percussion elements by placing some emphasis on low and high pitched parts of the sound. The X-Fi, at its release, offered some of the most powerful mixing capabilities available, making it a powerful entry-level card for home musicians. The other big improvement in the X-Fi over the previous Audigy designs was the complete overhaul of the resampling engine on the card.

Many hardcore users worked around this by means of resampling their content using high quality software decoders, usually in the form of a plugin in their media player. Creative completely re-wrote the resampling method used on the X-Fi and dedicated more than half of the power of the DSP to the process; resulting in a very clean resample.

Reviews have been generally positive, but pricing and small model differences have raised questions. Especially the low and mid priced models Recon3D PCIe and Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional have only cosmetic differences, but considerable price difference: the Fatal1ty Professional , adds a beamforming microphone, some red LED lights and a metal shroud over the board, but has no real hardware improvements.

The Sound BlasterX AE-5 was announced in June , the first discrete sound card made by Creative in five years since the introduction of the Z-series. The card was officially released on July 10, to celebrate 30 years since the introduction of the original Sound Blaster. The Sound BlasterX series was announced at Gamescom The BlasterX Acoustic Engine Lite software comes with preset audio profiles for different game types.

There is also an equalizer tab in the software. The Sound BlasterX P5 is an earphone with an inline microphone. Unlike the Sound Blaster E5, it does not have built-in microphones, rechargeable battery and Bluetooth connectivity. BlasterX Acoustic Engine profiles can be saved onto the device in Windows and used on a Mac computer. It has 4-pole headphones and a microphone audio port. Its headphones amplifier supports headphones with impedances from 16 ohms to ohms.

The profiles in the X-Plus Configurator apply equalizer settings tuned for certain games. Sound Blaster cards since conform to Microsoft's PC 99 standard for color-coding the external connectors as follows:. Up until the AWE line in , Creative cards have short text inscriptions on the backplane of the card, indicating which port does what i.

On later cards, the text inscriptions were changed to icons. With the latest cards from Creative, the cards were changed to use numbers as the ports are flexi-jacks and can have different functions assigned to them at run-time i.

Some drivers from the Audigy 2 ZS have been soft-modded by enthusiasts. These can be installed on Creative 's older cards, including Sound Blaster Live! It has been claimed to offer improved sound quality, hardware acceleration of higher EAX versions in games, channel mixing for Audigy 1, and an overall improvement in the card's performance.

Several forum posts across the web have reported favorable results with this technique, excepting Live! Comments on forums from developers of the software mod have said that Live!

Later, in , Creative released updated drivers top-to-bottom for the Audigy through Audigy 4 line that put these cards basically at feature parity on a software level. As of , the entire Audigy lineup uses the same driver package. DSP decoding at the driver level on other cards than Audigy 2 ZS and 4 is still not supported by official drivers, but it works with soft-modded drivers on the other cards with hardware DSP like Audigy 2 6.

When Windows Vista was released, there was only a single beta driver for the Creative Audigy series that was usable on the operating system with minimal functionality and frequent instability reported by users.

A Creative Forum activist named Daniel K. X-Fi drivers have noticeably better sound quality under Vista, and more bug fixes because of the newer build last modified version is 2. He managed to enable the X-Fi Crystallizer to work on Audigy series cards in software, however because of the patents involved, he was forced to remove all the modified drivers and DLL patch.

Creative then released a newer official Audigy Vista driver 2. However, some form of agreement between Creative and Daniel K has been achieved, as he returned to the Creative forums, posting updated versions of his modified drivers.

He released the final version of his modded driver package as of January 12, All recent Linux distributions support Sound Blaster Cards via kernel drivers. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
