If your Mac displays a flashing question mark for a few moments but then continues to boot, there is nothing wrong with your Mac. You only need to reselect your startup disk in System Preferences. The default boot device of your Mac is NOT set to your bootable hard drive. Your Mac has to search for ALL bootable drives before getting to your current hard disk drive. This search task causes the time delay and you get the momentary flashing folder with question mark.
Fixing this problem is very easy. Click the lock icon at the bottom and provide your password to unlock the windows. Click the icon of the disk you want to use to start up your Mac. Your Mac should now restart and boot up without the flashing folder with question mark. If your Mac stays on the flashing folder with question mark all the time, it indicates your Mac is in trouble.
Follow these steps to identify whether it is a software issue. Turn off your Mac by pressing and holding the power button for at least 5 seconds. Press the power button once to turn your Mac back on. Keep these three keys held down until you see the Wi-Fi network screen.
Select a Wi-Fi network and key in the password to connect to the Internet. Open the Disk Utility from the macOS Utilities windows, if your disk is shown under the internal section on the top left-hand side, your Mac most likely has a software-related issue. This means your Mac cannot communicate with the hard disk drive at all. Jump to the hardware section below if you have a hardware issue. In the Disk Utility window, select your startup disk and click the First Aid tab.
Click the Repair Disk button to verify and repair any issues. If Repair Disk reports issues such as bad sections, you have a hardware issue. This hardware issue is not fatal so you can still see the disk. If you are confident in the backup by yourself, go to the data backup section directly. After your disk is successfully repaired, quit Disk Utility. Choose Startup Disk from the Apple menu, select your startup disk and click restart.
You should be able to boot your Mac if your hard disk only has a mirror software issue. If you still can not boot your Mac, you may need to reinstall the macOS. You should back up any important data on your startup hard disk before erasing it. We discuss the backup procedure in the next section. If carried out carefully, all your data should be intact.
If you already have a bootable external drive containing the macOS, you can speed up the process by running the macOS Utilities directly from your external drive. The idea is to replace your corrupted system file and fix other software issues without deleting your personal data.
The macOS will be installed into your startup disk without overwriting your data. It is a good idea to connect the charger to your Mac before starting the installation process. In fact, the recent models of MacBook will insist that you must connect a charger before presenting you an option to proceed with the installation.
After the installation, your Mac should boot up normally. If your Mac still gets the flashing folder with question mark, you may need to perform a fresh-installation instead of this repair installation. Of course, you need to backup your data first. If the repair installation discussed above cannot fix your problem, you need to fresh-install the macOS.
It is always a good idea to do a fresh installation regularly. Fresh installation not only can fix all your software issues but also give you a faster, virus-free and more stable system. Use these steps to backup your data to an external drive:.
The drive needs to be the same size or larger than your current startup disk. Make sure that you select the external disk as the one you want to erase and install macOS. Take extreme care when you select the drive. After installation is finished, your Mac automatically restarts from the external drive. When Setup Assistant appears, select the option to migrate your data from another disk. Choose your built-in startup disk as the source to migrate your data from.
When the migration is done, complete the steps of the setup assistant. After the desktop appears, confirm that your data is present on the external drive. Remove your external drive from the Mac. This time, you need to select the built-in startup disk as the one you want to erase. When the installation is finished, your Mac automatically restarts from your built-in startup disk.
It may take several reboots to complete the installation depending on the macOS version you are installing. At the end of the installation, the setup assistant appears. You will be presented with an option to migrate your data. Plugin your external drive and wait for a while, your external drive should appear on the desktop. To copy your personal data back to your startup disk, select the option in the setup assistant to migrate your data from an existing Time Machine backup or other disks.
Choose the external drive as the source to migrate your data from. Your Mac will restart again on completing the data migration.
Verify your data before deleting the data in the external drive. It is a good practice to keep an updated copy of your valuable data regularly. If you have not yet used the Time Machine feature, use it now! The technicians of these official services are trained well in solving the software issues, but with limited knowledge in hardware. They cannot repair your Mac logic board or SSD drive apart from replacing them. But they are good enough to tell whether your Mac has a software or hardware problem and the service is free.
If they cannot help due to a hardware logic board issue, try a component-level chip level repairer to get your Mac repaired. If you cannot find one in your city, you may consider posting your Mac to another city. Search for a reputable component-level repairer and get a quote before sending out your Mac. It could be caused by a faulty cable connector on the logic board or faulty HDD cable. Examine the cable connector and make sure there is no foreign object in the connector.
All the pins of the connector should be clean and corrosion-free. Apple uses flex cable to connect the SATA hard drive to the logic board. The flex HDD cables could be broken due to stress and bent over time. When the flex HDD cable is fitted to the MacBook, it bends to 90 degrees twice on the edge of the super drive shown below.
The copper wire inside the flexible plastic tends to be broken at the bent section over time. The defective section can not be seen by naked eyes. It can be detected by a multimeter continuity test or examined by a microscope at the bent section. If in doubt replace it with a good HDD cable. You can buy a new HDD cable online for only a few dollars.
All Apple spare parts come with unique part numbers. Starting with macOS High Sierra When you install or upgrade your Mac to High Sierra or later macOS, the installer will automatically upgrade the firmware low-level system software stored in the ROM chip.
If somehow the firmware fails to complete the update, you will get a flashing folder with question mark. This is because the old firmware does not recognise the new APFS format. To fix the firmware issue, you need to install High Sierra or later macOS again on your hard drive and your data should be intact. If you really concern your data, you may choose to put in a new SSD hard drive and install the new macOS If all these fail to update the firmware, you can update the firmware manually.Add your answer

Samsung provide bootable disk images to update an SSD drive installed within a Mac:. Below you will find the latest firmware downloads for recent Samsung-branded SSDs.
The process is not friendly but it works. The disk image needs to be burnt to a CD, then you boot your Mac from the disc. The updating process takes seconds and is not complex. I recently applied the EVO update and while my update was not destructive, you must back-up first.
The update process explicitly warns that it could wipe the drive. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.
