Wind gigi masin album
Primarily an ambient record, collected from releases that cover the span of 25 years , Talk to the Sea does not sound like an anthology. The songs move quietly, succinctly, from one to another without even a hint of compilation fatigue. It feels more like a concept album about the ocean and all its splendor: waves, shores, blue, grey, wind, horizon, melancholy, inspiration, solitude, surface and depth. You sense a secret Gigi Masin society is building from the spirit of record labels like Windham Hill and F Communications: two very different approaches to making music, but very similar in sound and atmosphere.
But if you go back to early records by Liz Story, Robbie Basho, Marc Isham, and even the solo piano recordings of George Winston, you notice a pattern of relaxed expression in the playing and a sense of tranquility in the results—ambient music at its best.
Born in Venice, Italy in the mids, Masin has been a radio DJ, poet, musician, and writer, working in theater, television, and other art-related circles.
The Dutch label Music From Memory not only compiled a great selection of songs, but the record design is simple and beautiful, with a black and white matte finish in a gatefold sleeve. Nice to see a record label paying so much attention to detail with an artist that is still growing and producing new music.
We exchanged emails with Jamie Tiller, one of the label founders about Gigi Masin and the concept behind the label. Tell us about your label and the philosophy behind it? The label started quite organically actually.
There was no great plan behind it. A member of Italy's underground electronic scene, Masin pressed Wind privately and only released it at a series of small concerts in Most of the remaining copies were destroyed when Masin's house was flooded. In the years since he released two albums Clouds , in and The Distance , in with the newly formed trio Gaussian Curve , collaborated with Italian duo Tempelhof and released three solo albums and a number of singles and collaborative works.
Despite his childhood's dream of studying violin never became reality, Masin's love for music did not subside and soon evolved into first playing the guitar and then fulfilling his dream of becoming a radio speaker and DJ when he was 18 years old. As a host of a public radio's late-night show, Masin could play long sets of very diverse music of his liking. After almost 10 years covering this dream role, Masin found himself looking for a job as many public radio stations were closing down to changes in legislation.
He first tried to make music upon requests from friends working in theatre to use his vast collection of records and peculiar music for their productions. It was during these late s experimentations of sound collages made with tape loops, field recordings and turntablism that Masin discovered a new way to express his musical self which culminated in the release of his debut album Wind in Masin's first release Wind in self-released and distributed for free was a personal project originally conceived as a gift to give out at small local gigs and to friends.
After this release, Masin shifted his focus from music creation to raise his family and working for Poste italiane. After nearly a decade long hiatus, Masin reappeared on the scene with the solo album Lontano and the collaborative album Moltitudine in Labirinto with Giuseppe Caprioli, both on Giovanni Antognozzi's Ants Records.
In a flood in Venice destroyed nearly all of his work, tapes, records and musical equipment. The disappointment caused by this tragic event put Masin off creating music for a while until a friend requested a new album from him, which led Masin to buy a computer to make music, starting a new phase of innovation. He recorded The Last DJ and Infanthree for the Italian netlabel Laverna, followed by a series of artistic video creations with visual artists such as the painter and designer Luis Filipe Cunha.
In a bid to save his past work Masin joined forces with Tiller and Tako Reyenga, heads of Dutch label Music From Memory, to release Talk to the Sea , a retrospective compilation of his past work of 30 years.
Another successful collaboration struck in , following a show in Mantua Italy , with Luciano Ermondi and Paolo Mazzacani of the duo Tempelhof which resulted in two albums — Hoshi and Tsuki — two EP of remixes and two singles, all released on the Italian label Hell Yeah Recordings. The latter includes six adapted pieces, originally recorded live in inside the French Pavilion of La Biennale in Venice, temporarily transformed into a recording studio by artist and frequent collaborator Xavier Veilhan; during their residency, the duo recorded original content from improvised compositions with Masin on the guitar and Nash on the piano, using different microphone techniques.
Kick-off your shoes and enjoy this truly incredible journey! Hi Gigi, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your recording and what the idea was behind it…. You can imagine a nice afternoon when this Venice winter playing to be a small spring, you sit on the sofa watching the trees move with a nice wind that tells of distant places…. Could you tell us a little bit about your background, perhaps where you grew up and what first got you interested in music?
You have been at the very forefront of the ambient music world for more than three decades now.Your feedback for Gigi Masin
His debut, a collection of gentle, flowing pieces for piano and synthesizer, was simply called Wind. Many of his subsequent titles have referenced waves, clouds, and insects. His songs are largely wordless, but they nevertheless echo these sorts of images.
The melodies are simple and slow-moving, but in a powerful, unpredictable way. Being surrounded by sun, sea, and salty air was a way of escaping from the mundanities of life back home. Each piece is full of slowly sighing synth passages and languorous piano melodies that mimic the strange way time dilates when you remove yourself from the rhythms of the city, the way an afternoon alone at the beach can feel like a beautiful eternity.
You can sense that approach in the wonderful biodiversity of Calypso. Calypso is ambient in a broad sense, but it covers a lot of different moods and sounds. The album opens with a delicate flurry of strings and synthesizers, but it quickly moves into a sleepwalking rhythm that feels like equal parts Portishead and L.
Album Rating: 3. Agreed, my second favourite song of his behind clouds. My friend just told me about this guy. I'll have to check this album out. Album Rating: 4. Gigi Masin Wind 3. Review Summary: Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Wind was originally distributed with art depicting a grid of cuneiform, which I find it more fitting than the current iteration. Such text, as with the music, is distant and difficult to translate.
Masin himself seems to operate behind a veil, a shroud that not only covers the album with a tepid softness, but obfuscates the artist himself. He speaks hardly any words, and presents no arching narrative. He meanders and wades under waves of pillowy sounds, which can sometimes come close to suffocating. Within the ebb and flow of embryonic synths are the muted wailings of a man's consciousness.
