Those ancient arcade video games I remember the game of Pong which could be played on the TV through some sort of controller, but then the industry took a huge leap forward when "Space Invaders" came out. I've played that game but to be honest, I always preferred "Pac-Man" or "Galaga". It made me even sadder to know that, apparently, she was impoverished and with problems ranging from drinking to eating disorders at the time of her death.

Anyway, af How many more captions can any of us come up with for that somewhat annoyed jogger on the lonely road? I already gave a couple in the actual article for the album. Maybe another one is "OK, so was the hitchhiking sign a thumbs up or my arms on my hips?

I did mention in that article as well that I would eventually write about the remaining tracks that I hadn't covered there. So, more than a year later, here is one of them. Actually, it's the 2nd track, "Hanabira" Petals , written and co Man, the powers-that-be really updated those characters from "Cyborg: "! But this isn't the song. Actually, "Joy to the love" was the 2nd single by globe so it had been released some years before the band's relationship with the anime.

In fact, I remember hearing it in commercials selling the song and the album "globe". The single itself was released in September with Komuro providin That would especially hold true of Tokyo. Even better if one was holding a glass of bourbon. Rather interesting duo for this particular Reminiscings of Youth article. How did this all come about? When I first saw the music video for this on one of the many video shows that were showing on the local channels here in Toronto, I was absolutely mesmerized by this bizarre mix of graphics and old historical footage as Stefano Rota and Stefano Righi kept yelling out the title.

At the time, I couldn't recognize the lan Not nearly as wintry as it was yesterday, so perhaps we will finally be heading into something resembling the proper season of spring.

The rate of daily COVID increases has bumped up again for the second day in a row but only slightly, and the premier of the province has once stated that there's good news around the corner, so I'm wondering if this means that shopping malls may be opening up once more.

Any sign of team sports is several weeks again at the earliest, it seems. Over the past several years as I got back into anime again thanks to my good friend, the names of the seiyuus also became household words to me.

Although I have no real idea what the education is like for Japanese voice actors, I can imagine that they must receive the rigorous training in trying out all sorts of different timbres ranging from high-pitched moe to growly and threatening.

Usually, though, if I were asked to describe her us It is actually the first time that I had ever heard of this plant so my horticultural vocabulary has also benefited from the experience. Monday morning I went out to the local supermarket earlier today to get the week's groceries only to be greeted by wet snow. Yup, you read that correctly.

There was a brief but intense flurry of the white stuff as I walked over to the Metro. Fortunately, though, there was no lineup and I had plenty of space to get the food, including a few steaks that I'd assumed would be in short supply actually, beef is in short supply but I s Well, it's certainly an eye-grabbing name for a band!

And after YouTuber Xerf Xpec uploaded its lone single, "Midnight Walk", onto the platform early last month, it's received quite a few compliments. Furthermore, they have remained active up to last year at least according to their website. Milky Mama identifies itself as a band covering the genres of rock, AOR, pop and fusion. With a few changes in the lineup, the cur Happy Mother's Day! Even during this time, I hope all of you have had the chance to give tribute to your okaasan.

My Mom got something from my brother's family, and since she's a big fan of roast chicken from this place, I made my absolutely delectable With the current pandemic wreaking some havoc on TV programming all over the globe, Japanese TV as well has probably had to go to reruns or do their variety shows sans audiences.

At the time, COVID was still preventing us from seeing the light at the end of the dark tunnel, but now about 6 weeks later, although I realize that this insidious virus won't truly depart until the vaccine is created, there are signs that though we're not out of the woods, perhaps the Toronto train is partially out of that tunnel at least.

Our provincial premier has announced this afternoon that parks can now be opened but not campgrounds an Well, this has already been one interesting Saturday. Unseasonably cold and when I went out to grab the newspaper this morning, there were even snowflakes wafting down. I don't think I've seen snow in May since my elementary school years. Plus, the number of daily new infections on the provincial level has dropped down to which is the lowest that we've seen in a month knock on wood.

Moreover, Toronto has slowly and carefully continued to open up the economy with those garden shops and hardware stores back open for in-store business, and even the sidewalk retail outlets will be allowed to Depending on the arrangement, "Sayonara Kaikyo", about a woman who's heading up north to reluctantly flee a now-dead romance, can sound like the most shibui of enka songs or, as it sounds above, it can come across as somewhat Mood Kayo.

In any event, wringing one's h This is "Mahiru" High Noon by Hokkaido-based benzo, a band that had an initial time together between and At first, I was rather wondering whether the mellow bouncy funk of "Mahiru" would be considered to be in Shibuya-kei but then I kept getting reminded of some of that City Pop of the s, so I've categorized it as such even though it's not all that easy to think of the genre during the late s.

According to Perhaps it was about a year ago when the virtual hangout club for Japanese urban contemporary music enthusiasts known as Van Paugam's City Pop Radio was taken down much to our grief. I think probably since then a lot of genre compilations have popped up like baby rabbits, and it's possible that fans learned a lesson from the City Pop guru and started listening to the music while viewing some soothing car-traveling videos on YouTube and the like.

A track from her 2nd album from , "Pink Diamond", this song actually has me reminiscing about those old days, and I do get these Christina Aguilera vibes when I hear her voice. As well, the video is shot around Omotesando in Tokyo, one of my favourite haunts in the megalopolis although it was a cinch that I couldn't afford to shop in pro It wasn't a favourite of mine under any circumstances but obviously I was in the minority since it was one of the biggest hits of No.

Again, this was another song that got At the same time that I was getting into Japanese pop music, I was also developing my interest in pop music in general thanks to music videos and radio. However as a subset of this, technopop was also on my Like radar. In the beginning of the s, it was folks like Gary Numan, The Hum It's epic, sweeping, romantic and has that nice flavouring of Latin spice.

I first heard it on that collection of standard LPs that we got when my parents purchased the humongous RCA stereo player, and through multiple listenings of The Pops' version, it's basically imprinted itself as the version for me. Go ahead. The f Not really sure if this is more of a pop song than a City Pop number but I think that there is enough of a bass-heavy groove in there and considering Aran has been so associated with the genre, I think it deserves at least honorary status.

Not too bad a day today. The increase in new cases of COVID has abated a bit today, the weather is pretty glorious out there, and for the first time in several weeks, I was able to track down two mini-cans of Lysol disinfectant spray. Good times! Also, my Twitter account was followed by a musician named Masa thank you, by the way I'm now following you also based in the United Kingdom I'm hoping the situation there is slowly improving who also has a YouTube channel called "Masa -- Blues City Pop".

The first video there that was presented to me was a first in a multi-video series on how I've been holding back on the CD purchases for the past several weeks. My policy is that I don't go on the kayo kyoku-buying binge until much later in the year around The Holidays, and certainly not around tax return season. Happy Monday! As I've said before, we simply didn't get any of the big kayo singers here in this city unless they had happened to be doing a gig in New York City it's only a 1-hour flight from The Big Apple to The 6ix the day before.

As Elton John once sang "Sad songs say so much". It's just plain sad as Sakurada sings about a woman who put on her best black dress to get that dance with the guy she had feelings for. But alas, we all know about best-laid plans, don't we? The night's over, the party staff is putting away the empty champagne bottles and the poor lass is still hanging about while everyone's he Some aural orange juice for those who have just woken up on this lazy first Sunday in May.

Still, I'm grateful since when I did my due diligence, I encountered this dynamic pop tune by her. According to some of the webpages, Kuramoto only released one single and one album, both in Not watching a whole lot of anime aside from what I've been re-viewing from the collection of past shows since the pandemic has postponed the Routine with my friend for the foreseeable future.

Nice to see those calming slice-of-life shows. Then I enjoyed it so much that I listened to the power middle-order lineup on the album once more. At the time that I wrote up the article for the album, those three songs were the only ones represented on YouTube very much thankfully, though. However, recently I was able to find a new video showing off one of the other trac Yes, indeed it was The Divine Miss M singing this song.

Can't consider myself a prolific baker but once in a while, I like to whip up some old-fashion Pineapple Upside-Down Cake for the family. All this time, I had seen the congenial Kamayatsu on TV for years and knew him as an ever-grinn Often has been the time that I've thought that Toko Furuuchi's blend of light soul and pop is so calming that it's nearly therapeutic on whatever stresses listeners may be suffering from.

This first track from her October 13th album "In Love Again" is another dose of her medicine. I think that there's a saying about really getting to know your own hometown only when you're separated from it for a length of time. Perhaps that is the thrust behind Okinawan folk-blues band BEGIN's "Kono Machi Hanarete" Leaving This Town , a happy-sad tune that talks of a young fellow who's leaving his own home willingly to go on a search for himself, and maybe to realize how good his birthplace has been to him all these years.

I don't know very much about Okinawan music, but what I do know has been wrapped around the native three-stringed lute known as the sanshin, and with "Kono Machi Hana Nice to have gotten some bagels and English muffins last week from the supermarket.

I always appreciate the variety. Did the same thing this morning and got the same items to tide us over until next week. An intriguing one to start off the City Pop stuff for this Friday as we also begin the month of May. Pre-Debut " yesterday afternoon, I found out that the three songs that had been made by Japanese artists were too good just to reference in one Creator article. Each of them deserved its own article, so "Suna no Onna" gets its due her Continuing on from Part 1 that is "Who Influenced Toshiki Kadomatsu Pre-Debut ", I bring you Part 2 with the singers and songs that helped in shaping this man's sound following his official start in as an entertainer.

Unlike yesterday's pre-debut batch in which the majority of the songs were new ones for me, most of the post-debut entries coming up have been very well known and cherished to me since my school years. Kinda like ho Well, I'm keeping part of my promise to cover individually some of those songs that influenced one of City Pop's greatest figures when he was a kid via the first part of the two-article series of "Who Influenced Toshiki Kadomatsu?

The lyrics by Yamashita and Ito read of Today has perhaps ended up as being one of the more positive days for me so far during this COVID nightmare. Toronto's rate of new infections dropped to around the low s and on a more personal level for our family, TV Japan just announced that their regular broadcasting schedule will be returning this Saturday after almost a month of the NHK World Premium schedule.

It turned out that TV Japan based in New York had a number of its staffers come down with the coronavirus which Moony-eyed romantic. Urban funkadelia. What can I tell ya? Soulful balladeer of yesteryear. I think that we can all agree that there are probably a few more descriptors that we can add here, but let's stick with this bunch. However, I wanted to find another song in tribute to Yoshikawa, and noticed in the "Ka Most fortunately, I did find a song that I hadn't covered in the original article for Sato's magnum opus.

After listening to the track "It Isn't Easy", my first and continuing thought was that it really doesn't need Sato's introductory vocal because I think it almost belongs to a different song. Once it hits 22 seconds, though, that's when we get the ironically easy melody considering the title by Sato, the musical equivalent of a hammo Hi there, J-Canuck here! Last Friday, I put up an article introducing a fellow J-Pop blogger by the name of jigenbakuda and his own creation "The Tasogare Touch" where he gives some of his own musical insights into particular songs.

By his own admission, he has mainly covered the music of contemporary aidoru but from time to time, he has also looked at the older Showa Era stuff as well. In the name of good diplomatic relations, jigenbakuda requested whether he could provide a guest contribution to "Kayo Kyoku Plus", and I was more than happy to oblige. His article here is based on the Yoko Ogin Then when I finally heard it, I realized that I did hear it before. It just so happened that I was watching an episode of "The Best 10", and Nori-P was performing this very song on some elaborate set of a house.

Happy Monday to you! Well, while knocking on wood most vigorously, it looks like things just might be turning a positive curve with the pandemic in our province of Ontario since in less than a couple of hours, our Premier will be making an announcement on the timeline for re-opening up the economy.

Considering that Doug Ford pounded the slogan "Open for Business" into our heads before COVID hit us, he may be trying to hide some giddiness under that stony face that has been greeting us in daily pressers for the past several weeks.

At this point, I think a lot of us will be happy for some goo The current pandemic has turned a lot of things upside-down and that includes zoos. Over the past few weeks, I've read that the Vancouver Zoo was in danger of closing down permanently, so I'm hoping that the situation on the west coast has been alleviated somewhat. Our own Toronto Zoo has been making a plea for help since it relies heavily on parking fees and admission and those aren't coming in during the lockdown to help feed the animals, so it's been going on an emergency fundraising mission.

The temperature may be in double digits for the first time in several days, but it sure doesn't feel like it. Pretty chilly out there and I've shut the window in my room for it. Anyways, there was a little promotional film made in for Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" which I've wondered whether it would be considered to be one of the very first music videos ever made. Well, actually to be perfectly accurate, I was living in the satellite city Ichikawa in Chiba Prefecture which is only 20 minutes away by the Tozai Line to downtown Tokyo.

As with any residential situation, one has got to weigh the good with the bad. Lots of things to do versus higher prices or commuting hell versus many interesting neighbourhoods with their own distinctive character. Certainly, I'm not the first and I won't be the last to wonder about city living especially in one of the biggest vibrant metropolises on Earth really gotta extend the subway hours, thou Pretty busy day and night today, so before I end the festivities for another broadcast day, let's try one more City Pop outing.

A track from her January album "Maym", and yep, despite the dark background for that video above, it still works. A song from the jazzier side of City Pop, it still provides some walking fun Fine funky beat, tight horns and that sax solo A lot of gems in that particular compilation. His stuff usually demands that flood of endorphins to wash through my brain. The song was originally a track from Tomita L I was contacted yesterday by a fellow J-Pop blogger by the name of jigenbakuda regarding his own creation, "The Tasogare Touch".

Now, my own comments on both "Eki" and "Tasogare My Love" weren't exactly voluminous so I appreciate th Ordinarily, Japan would be entering one of the biggest holiday periods of the year, Golden Week. In fact, this will end up becoming the largest mass staycation in Japanese history, and I hope that this record will be achieved. So, certainly, all of my good wishes are going out to my friends and relatives over there to stay safe and healthy during this time.

Some 5 odd years later Well, in October , Ishiguro released her 9th single "I Remember You", and this one has more of a languid 50s love tune feeling along the same lines of a similarly titled song "Do You Remember Me?

Apparently, "I Remember You" was I've been more than happy to start up and continue with "Kayo Kyoku Plus" for a number of reasons. My initial mission to seek out other fellow kayo fans in the world quickly attained its goal within a few months thanks to the comments, and I'm happy that some of them became my fellow writers on the blog.

Also, the blog and the commenters have provided me with a lot of new songs to enjoy to the extent that I've bought the originating albums. One other thing that I've been grateful for is that along with the ability to find out about new songs in City Pop, my favourite genre, I've also been to d For nostalgia's sake tonight, I put on one of my ancient Canadian Tire tapes with stuff that I had recorded all the way back in my high school years s.

Luckily, though, the damage wasn't too bad. Well, one of those that kinda fell between the engrams in my brain. As soon as I read the title and then imagined the singer himself yelling it out, I knew that I had heard "Horeta ze!

Kanpai" I'm In Love! Hooray in the past. I guess that there must have been a Matchy sound back then. Kanpai" reminds me somewhat of his "Blue Jeans Memory" in that there are those dramatic cutting strings and that There are a number of tropes when it comes to the old American sitcom.

I think one would be the sidekick with the glib tongue who just can't seem to catch a break in romance. This was their 28th single from Febr Welcome to Hump Day! However, the first time that I ever heard of Sorimachi, my memories fly back to the late s when there was this Fuji-TV drama that was in the prestigious Monday at 9 pm time slot a la "Tokyo Love Story" and "st Proposal". Quite different from those two shows in , "Beach Boys" was probably a series that had sun worshippers punching the air with their fists w One of my haunts when I was living in the Tokyo area was the neighbourhood of Jimbocho which melds smoothly into Kanda to become this large region perfect for bibliophiles.

Even when I had been living earlier in Gunma, whenever I came down to the megalopolis, I would visit Jimbocho, specifically Sanseido Book Store since they had an English-language book floor where I would stock up on the latest issues of magazines and comic books.

Although far fewer in number, Jimbocho also had shops that dealt in used or old CDs which meant that there were treasures to be had in terms of a kayo lover like me Went out early this morning to grab as many groceries for the week that I could. About a hundred bucks later, I dragged the entire load back home, and perhaps my arms got a fine workout, to boot. Not a big fan of those automated cashiers, though.

In any case, it's looking really nice out there with the sun and cool temperatures. But of course, we all gotta stay home. I and my friends are hoping that maybe some good news will come in about a month or so. So, in the interim, how about some nice 90s J-Pop with a rock edge by one of the more famous and popular artists of that decade, ZARD?

To be h Sometimes I just revisit artists, resulting in a very nostalgic journey, but other times I discover entirely new ones, which is always a thrill. A third case is also very common, and it happens when I revisit an artist I already knew some songs, but then decide to expand my knowledge of them listening to their discographies. Unfortunately, I forget what the original Japanese title is of this program on the World Premium service but the English title has always been listed as so.

It's twice as long as the average "Uta Kon" episode and the stress is on showing the kayo singers performing the old hits instead of t Rocket Brown of Come Along Radio and I had a nice little chat for an hour on Saturday, and compared our lockdown situations in California and Ontario respectively, before talking about our mutual favoured genre of City Pop. This is an interesting title for one fun upbeat song.

The horns synth and real and bouncing bass are in there to provide some go Got one more up my sleeve for articles tonight and so I'll finish things off with a City Pop tune from an unlikely source. Well, I got another surprise here as well, since the B-side to her By the music video for the song was filmed in Aokigahara Forest, kno So, I was left wondering if I had left out any of the guys' big hits out of the loop after so many years.

Well, as it turns out, I did. That intro sounds a lot like the one for "Mony Mony" which was a favourite at the discos when I was a university student. In any case, the band rumania montevideo was one that I'd always been interested in trying out and it isn't just because of the name which originated as a melding of the Latin spelling of Romania and the capital of Uruguay, according to its Wikipedia article.

Years ago, I had written about the dream pop "Overjoyed", a song that I came upon purely by accident on one of the Japanese music channels and was performed by Ramjet Pulley, a smaller offshoot of rumania montevideo wi At the end, she gives her hope that we can all look back on this current time as a past event. Indeed, let us hope so. However until recently, I couldn't find anything of her material on YouTube.

That has now changed thanks to folks like Xerf Xpec, so many thanks to them all. Singer-songwriter Ishibashi released her first album "Nice to Meet You" back in March and from what I've read for the review of this inaugural release, it's not chock-filled with City Pop but showcases a number of genres from Ishibashi such as blues and jazz as well. Originally from Murata's 10th studio album "evergreen" from June , "TRUST" is the one appropriate tune to let those lovers who've hit a bump in the road of love know that everything will be A-OK.

Just keep the faith in the relationship. However, I think that there is also Well, did my shopping at the nearby Metro this morning. There was a line to get into the supermarket, but the minute wait wasn't too bad and when I did get in, I could find just about everything that my family needed. Of course, I had the mask on.

I don't really mind it but it gets annoying when my glasses fog up from the condensation through my breath popping out from the top of the mask. Another track is "Kare ni wa Kanawanai" which was also Koyama's single maybe her only one. Tried to find the translation It's a short and sweet burst of Okinawan twang and boppy beats paired with Inoue's stream of English.

The official video above makes use of that ancient computer effect known as morphing. How natsukashii! I have to admit that I could never have imagined such an amicable relationship between a ruminant mammal and a cephalopod so I believe that my mind needs to However, I was interested in finding out more about Hasegawa.

His J-Wiki article states that the singer-songwriter and guitarist from Tokyo eventually lost his sight due to glaucoma at a young age. However, he won 4th place at a chanson competition when he was a high school senior, and in , he debuted professionally wit So I tried to track it down on YouTube but currently there isn't any sign of it.

Noelle has written about their most famous hit, "Nani mo Ienakute Looks like someone has brought back the City Pop radio though it's not live with the gorgeous ride through Tokyo again. When it comes down to it, jazz still had a torch being lit for it by some of the Japanese pop stars of the 70s and 80s.

Then, there's Mariya's good buddy, EPO. In the same year that the album "Miss M" carrying "Ame no Drive" was re Amazing what a sake commercial can do for a song. Well, actually, I'm not sure whether it was the song that enhanced the ad or vice versa, but whenever I hear this number, I can only remember this one. Ordinarily, I would have snarked that he really needed that drink, but with this ballad playing in the background, the ad now comes across as an epic scene from a period romance in the Edo Era in which the samurai is despe Not quite sure what is up with such an exacting split in the relationship, but the bouncy beat can't be denied.

Maybe Marcos V. Still, the song has the best of both worlds for me in terms of the genres involved with the crashing synths of one genre and the groovy beat of the other. There is especially It's too bad, of course, but under the circumstances, everyone has A very nice way to finish the weekend last night even during these bad times.

And would the new theme be even better than or at least on the same level as "Love Dramatic"? I did find one track from "Sakuban O-Aishimashou" that I hadn't covered in the original article, and once again, Yuming brings forth another groovalicious tune with "Machikado no Pessimist" Street Corner Pessimist.

Therefore, as I've done before, I've always tried to go back to veteran singers' origins in terms of what they debuted with. And so it goes with Yamashita. Her first single was "Bathroo Of course, I was wrong, and happily so.

If it were just a City Pop album, I think that would have been cheating us and Yamane from showing off the range of her rich bluesy voice, which she does in tracks like "Heart For Sale". Quite a f I've got no idea what this building is housing, but it's got quite the funky shape. Anyways, it's located right across the movie theatre where my friend was managing.

Usually when I remember songs from that year, they come up as either aidoru or City Pop, and "Building Gray" is definitely neither. It's actually a melancholy ballad which starts with some nice choral h Indeed, he did compose and arrange the song while Lorraine Feather came up with the lyrics. Interesting thing about "Shooting for the Stars" is that there is also some feeling of Hollywood captivation in there t Welcome to another new week. News has perhaps not been the happiest of late but for those fans of "Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka?

Late last month, it was announced that the third season of high school girls, rabbits and cafes that can soothe the heck out of viewers has been slated for October , so hopefully, in another 6 months, we can all see the latest adventures of Cocoa, Chino and the rest of the hot drink-loving gang in their lovely town. Actually, though, that melody is the start of a theme song for a totally different anime that had come out back in , "K One of the side effects of staying at home as often as possible has been a gain in weight for me.

Not a great thing, although it does say a lot about my family's cooking prowess to a certain extent. In any case, I actually had one of my longer walks around the neighbourhood, while practicing my social distancing, of course. But it's not too difficult here because even before the invasion of COVID, my walking area was always deserted. Even seeing three people also walking about from a long distance away during my 40 minutes out this morning made things downright "busy".

Still, everything's c Once the all-clear is given regarding the worst medical crisis in recent human history, I'm betting that a good cross-section of folks will be more than happy to cut up a rug or a thousand in the dance clubs. All that pent-up tension has got to go somewhere in celebration, so let's hope that it's sooner rather than later. Compared to the wondrous and tenderhearted "Kaze no Eolia" which became the very serious jingle for a Panasonic air conditioner back in the day, the B-side, "Mayonaka no Liberty" Midnight Liberty takes things to downtown Tokyo.

Strangely enough, Rei's shouting of the title in the song reminded me of Madge's "Gambler". Indeed, it's Friday. They would be correct.

Instead of hitting the streets of Shinjuku in a glossy red convertible, JADOES take things to a simple romantic walk along the beach at sunset with this ballad. Earlier today, the premier of our province Ontario put out all of the modeling data on what the death toll could be like due to COVID The stats aren't great, and frankly they are meant to scare us into absolute seriousness about how this terrible disease should be treated. Of course, my stress levels were elevated on first hearing this news.

So, how am I coping with the current reality? Well, along with blogging everyday, taking walks in the neighbourhood while keeping my distance , and keeping in touch with other family and friends, I do have my various other audiovisual therapies such as Sorry to give out some more bad news but soul singer-songwriter Bill Withers passed away today at the age of 81 earlier this week on March 30th.

It's rather like seeing the government and medical experts acting like that fisherman trying to wrest that fighting muskie representing the rates into submission. Anyways, the subject of this article is another one of those obscure-but-grand City Pop finds.

In fact, sometimes I almost forget how I much I have always loved that song, and also how it encapsulates the type of singles that aidoru singers usually releases in the summer, or, in this case, a month before its start in the northern hemisphere, of course. Since then, I was able to discover one of his earlier works in the form of his album "Easy Breathing", and within it, there is the track "Living in the City".

Man, this is the sort of pleasant and mellow song that you want to hear when you're waking up on a sunny morning in your suite at the Keio Plaza With the steep slopes, I am assuming Nagasaki.

Takashima was also responsible for words and music behind "Anywhere", their April single that is relaxing to hea It stands out for an arrangement that is sprinkled with classical violin and characterized by those wonderful harmonies between Takashi and Susum We're into June now and the weather in Toronto has been a little cooler, a little fresher in the air.

Not a bad meteorological development. Let's start the month off then with something appropriately summery. I gotta say that she makes quite a splash with her "Sevilla Breeze", the title track from her album, and though I couldn't find out who is on the bass, my compliments to the bassist regardless. This is really sunny playing and the t I think I heard it for the first time when it was used as the ending music for one of those anime compilation videos on YouTube whether it b Here's another one from my Reminiscings of Youth file and this time we're going to June Yes, the age when bell-bottoms and wide lapels were king!

Yes, I was indeed alive back then and actually saw them being worn Before recently happily re-acquainting myself with this enormously cool and funky Scaggs' trademark number, what I had retained in my noggin was that blast of horns that came in twice during the song.

In fact, I hadn't even been aware that it was Scaggs' tu Nothing like a good kaiju movie on Sunday afternoon, and it was around this time almost 50 years ago that from time to time that one of the Buffalo New York television affiliates would throw on a movie starring Godzilla, Mothra or Gamera battling another gigantic threat to Tokyo. Gamera vs. Actually, I kinda recall see A Good Sunday to you as we come to the end of May and perhaps to the start of some normalcy from this pandemic.

Continuing on with our weekend of Matts, commenter Matt K. With "Yellow Moonlight", which was a track on Okayasu's How does that saying go, "Happiness is a warm blanket, Charlie Brown"?

Yes, indeed. Then again, it was a B-side to the band's December 16th single "Juliet", which I do know very well as this dreamy ballad from their album "A Kurahashi's version of "Yume no Tochuu" has got that added delight of her vocals and bossa nova in the arrangement which makes for a nice contrast with Kisugi's straight-ahead pop take and Yakushim Not quite certain who the really popular actresses in Hollywood were at around the same time: were they Shirley MacLaine and Audrey Hepburn? I think I may have a slightly stronger handle when it comes to the Japanese equivalent Of course, Yoshinaga has been represented on "Kayo Kyoku Plus" for a long while.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend out there. My province of Ontario is gradually re-opening for business as it appears that our Premier is aiming for a regionalized approach. For instance, it's possible that the eastern part will go into Stage II earlier since the infection rates are nowhere near as high as they are in Toronto. Overall, although the rate of daily new cases is still pretty high in the s, we're being reassured that we are past the peak for at least the first wave.

Nope, not exactly a view from a veranda but it was actually a shot that I took from the pier in Mexico during the family cruise back in Kinda hard to imagine people taking cruises nowadays but perhaps when the pandemic is all over He got to finally sing the number through his first of four original albums "She" released in Watanabe armed with his bass has been with a number of his bands in his career which i I listened to this song some hours earlier in the afternoon and then again just now following dinner, and I have an interesting thought about it.

Perhaps it was the chicken steak in Japanese-style onion sauce that did it. For instance, it starts off with a bit of contemporary jazz before Kido goes into his singing while I hear some City Pop here and then even some It's the sort of music where you expect any music video for that singer to have her lying on a chaise longue quietly asking "My grape please Well, the lead track on Kado's debut album "Fascination", which has both the title track and "Blue", is "Morning Kiss", written and composed by her.

I wouldn't say that it was fashion music this time around since on hearing this o However, even if that particular song has been the only thing that has gained them fame and fortune, their die-hard fans and that includes me for both Tokito and Kobayashi know that that they've continued to provide some fine music for years.

In fact, according A little over three weeks following my last Author's Picks article on traveling around the world, I decided to go for another one. This time, though, it's on the topic of food. Obviously when one thinks about world travel, one also has to consider the cuisine in those far-flung places. The show focuses on the working class in all sorts of industries and what they go for in terms of lunch with the title being an abbreviation of "salaryman's meal".

Another surprise regarding kotringo was in store for me on I hope everyone has been dealing with these times the best way possible. I sure am trying, amidst online classes and assignments, to dedicate myself to my hobbies, including the Animal Crossing craze. While exercising, I have been listening to some music I wanted to pick up for a while, mostly modern aidoru. One of these is the album I am going to cover. It was formed in after Hikari Takiguchi and Misato Miira formerly known as Misato Misaki departed from their former group to seek creative independence.

They scouted H Then, there is her follow-up single released in February , "Love Me Tender". Of course, there was a ballad with that very title by the King of Rock and Roll that has become a common selection at the karaoke bars and boxes for decades.

Iyo-chan's "Love Me Tender" is neither rock Basically the title track from his 2nd and final album to date, "Pretender", I couldn't relax any more in my chair without breaking laws of physics while listening to it. Those languid keyboards keep the atmosphere on a very even but gently swaying keel while the listener is perhaps enjoying that liqueur I mentioned off the top.

There's that taste of summer out there. It's sunny and warm but we Canadians all still have to do that social distancing that we've been performing for the past couple of months. Incidentally, my congratulations to Japan for having its restrictions lifted; I really hope that any second wave of COVID there is minimal.

It was an hour's walk all around including 5 minutes within the establishment itself, but for the first time in over 2 months, I actually set foot in a bricks-and-mortar shop that didn't sell food or medicine.

My target was an office supplies store not too far from my home where This enka tune probably comes under the category of "You can take the man out of his hometown, but you can't take the hometown out of the man". This is his April single, and as would be the case for any traditional kayo with a geographical region, "man" and "melody" in the title, it's got a goodly amount of brio in the music featuring shamisen and shakuhachi.

According to the Y Yep, yep I pulled off another Van Paugam on Friday night. Love that drive up the main street approaching the famous Marina Bay Sands Hotel at about Realizing that considering the title, maybe I'm jumping the gun by putting this one up on a Sunday, but it's a very pleasant Sunday-worthy ballad.

Like Hayami and "Yuuei", Sakamoto's "Kayo As for Sakai, she has specialized in blues and jazz and made her debut in with a stint at a Roppongi club called Misty. The thumbnail photo is from my Musashi-Kosugi-residing friends' condo.

It's a nice sunset shot and an appropriate one for this song. Maybe loved ones are apart due to circumstances but they will be back together again. I would say that the song would even be Really nice start to the weekend, and I'm not just talking about the summery weather outside that Toronto is feeling.

Alas, searching around YouTube hadn't been too successful for many years. That is, until last night. I was listening to one of my albums and was about to turn in when just for the heck of it, I decided to see if there was anything new in the Iwasaki file on I did visit Hokkaido years ago but only Sapporo, so I missed out on the famous lavender fields of Furano.

As the video above from the YouTube channel, Good Day Hokkaido, shows you, the lavender spreads out like a huge rolling carpet to produce what is probably one of the most famous landscapes in Japan. Since I've missed my opportunity, I think the only lavender that I'll come across in the near future will still be through an aerosol can. As we City Pop fans know, she was one of the mainstays for music of the genre throughout the s and into the early s. I heard some fascinating element Well, hello to Friday so we've got another City Pop day lined up.

Last weekend, I decided to do pull another Van Paugam with the help of J Utah on YouTube, and to explain, a couple of weeks ago, I discovered this YouTube channel called J Utah which specializes in videos displaying long drives through the big cities of the world.

Sowelu was one of the names that had been bandied about along with other singers such as bird, Misia and m-flo. I knew about Sowelu but she didn't seem to quite get that traction on fame as some of her contemporaries did, although with 19 singles and 6 original albums be I've been grateful to a lot of folks ranging from commenters to fellow KKP writers to the City Pop big wigs such as Van Paugam and Rocket Brown for their tips on some fine music.

Not only has the channel provided a lot of amusement through his videos based on a variety of genre tropes, but it has used introductory music that has tickled my ears such as Little Glee Monster's "Seishun Photograph". KHORnime's latest creation was his video on deranged women with ki Who da thunk it?

And yet, Ozawa's only apparent involvement with "Corolla II ni Notte", his 6th single from New Year's Day , was behind the microphone in the recording booth. I'd heard of this anime "Baccano! Well, just by coincidence, the opening credits for "Baccano! Secondly, because our spring here in Toronto has gotten off to frankly an unusually cold and lousy start, I feel that I will need her assistance in bringing some of that summery feeling to this blog at least.

The song also served as Anri's 12th single from the same release day. From just fr Considering the name of the group and the year, I probably would be forgiven for thinking that this trio was another in the long line of guitar-jangling Group Sounds bands just like Ox or The Spiders. I remember this one. No surprise since it was used for a Kose cosmetics commercial and it hit No. According to the Wikipedia article on "Evolution", apparently the critics didn't particularly like her way of delivering the lyrics those Holiday Monday here with it being Victoria Day today.

Normally, there would be the usual fireworks display down at Ashbridges Bay to highlight the first unofficial summer long weekend, but of course, as with many events now and for the foreseeable future, there won't be any of that tonight.

Did hear some individual firecrackers going off last night somewhere in the neighbourhood, though. Fireworks are part and parcel of the Japanese summer festival experience so I am wondering what will become of events such as the Sumida River Fireworks Festival and similar happenings this summer in Japan, alt As the expression goes, "Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

That's probably been the case with the long-running Suntory Highball-in-a-can commercials since they've been using variations on the same song for about 30 years.

A couple of nights ago, The above is a shot from the platform of JR Ichigaya Station near where I used to work for several years. Just off to the right, you can see some man-made fishing ponds where Tokyoites can execute their hobby right in the middle of the megalopolis. Never did it myself since I left that childhood custom years ago. Some Sunday City Pop to start off today. For tonight's Captain Obvious phrase, I would like say that Kyon-Kyon is the one at the very bottom of the above photo.

I've made mention of the fact that I have some lingering audio tapes from way back in my high school and university days. At this point, they seem to be content acting as curios of a different audio age or as possible food for my voracious tape recorder Jaws; hopefully, they can still act as vessels to provide those kayo from yesterday.

Of course, the NHK music shows are in reruns and we got to see the final "Songs of Japanese Spirit" for earlier this afternoon. I heard a lot of good kayo and was hoping to write about some of them, only to find out that I had already written about them. When I've been writing articles on the blog for over 8 years, some of them will eventually slip my mind. There's a lis I see that title and I get hungry for that old Pizza Hut pizza.

It was always the Super Supreme for me and back in my university days, my buddies and I would hit a branch near U of T.

Indeed we let ourselves go to Pizza Hut, and after absorbing all that fat and calories, I definitely let myself go. Once again, I use a desperate segue to bring us all to another cool urban contemporary number for tonight, "Let Yourself Go", a track from "Summer Nights", the July album feat Fujiro had a wonderfully soulful voice which ma I've been waiting to get this particular track up for a while now and finally I get to do it.

But let me get this out of my system However the one that has stood out for me is Track 2, "Black Canal" at of the above video for the entire album. Reading the Wikipedia article for "To Chi Ka", the album is jam-packed with some of the finest musicians from jazz, rock and Fortunately, contributor T-cat set me right a few years ago when he provided the first article for the band on KKP via their "Telecaster Stripe". The animal does exist!

As Shiina has ev Luckily, commenter bon dropped by to give me some suggestions on the last article for Julie. Oh, boy!

The J-Wiki article on the album provided some explanation on man Ever since getting back from Japan for good and getting into anime viewing again in the early part of the last decade, I've seen my fair share of programs with those elements of naughtiness, although my anime buddy doesn't go out of his way to get the hentai stuff.

For one thing, there are no more studio audiences allowed and the plethora of tarento often Ahhh, yes. When men wore a light-coloured wardrobe to be cool. Indeed, we were into the s, weren't we? Therefore, as I've done before, I've always tried to go back to veteran singers' origins in terms of what they debuted with.

And so it goes with Yamashita. Her first single was "Bathroo Of course, I was wrong, and happily so. If it were just a City Pop album, I think that would have been cheating us and Yamane from showing off the range of her rich bluesy voice, which she does in tracks like "Heart For Sale".

The singer wrote and composed this 2nd One reason that I'm writing about "Red Lotus Man", the first track on Jimbo's solo debut album "Cotton" , is because I'm drawn to the snazziness of the Latin jazz involved here, and the fact that the vocal stylings remind me a whole lot of the works of The Manhattan Transfer. Plus, there is also something rather nostalgic about "Red Lotus Man" Before TV Japan's schedule got adjusted due to COVID, the noon hour broadcasts usually consisted of educational material including language training with celebrities.

Not surprising when I read on her Wikipedia article that she had actually lived in the country when she was 13 and 14 years old. She had also been born in Mexico and learned how to speak Spanish initally, but apparently the ability faded away during her elementary school years in Japan since she couldn't practice With words and music by Matsuyama, "Hamabe" is quite the rollicking and dramatic serenade to that special woman.

The lyrics seem to be summed up as a parody of a Shakespearian line: "Shall I compare thee to a beach? The music just chugs away like a well-oiled sports car driving along the coast.

In the meantime as far as this blog is concerned, we can always look for some J-Disco. Found this one purely by accident under YouTube recommendations. Good afternoon. Hope you're enjoying your weekend so far.
