Naturally, it was a great pleasure, a creative challenge as well as an exceptional honour to translate all the co-authors into my native Lithuanian. Although the reader will notice that in terms of a geographical landscape the focus on East Central Europe did not disappear, nevertheless, it is also conspicuous that the memory of this region is analyzed in relation to the memory politics of Western and Scandinavian Europe.

Cross-regional comparisons of memory and cultural identity issues should give the reader the feeling of transnational altitudes, while preserving the taste of regional and national speciics. His public lectures attract large audiences in various European universities. Does it mean then that political dissent in Central European countries like Poland or the former Czechoslovakia was possible till , since aterwards democracy allowed freedom of speech?

In other words, is totalitarian regime a prerequisite for political potentiality to be a dissident? Only the penalties for the stubbornness and indefatigability in telling what one believes to be the truth difer. You need courage. Departing from ruling opinion whether ruling through coercion or through conviction, through number of guns or number of minds is not a recipe for quiet life.

Swimming with a current belongs in the irst category, swimming against in the second. And all majorities started from being in minority… Without people daring to stand out and be counted, we would be still living in caves… T. Is it a universal law of politics that what is good till the revolution — even the velvet one — does not work aterwards?

Does this problem lead us to a philosophical dualism formulated by Machiavelli — the political ideals should be separated from realpolitik of everyday life? Even Plato had doubts whether it is possible to implement ideal state in reality. What is Your opinion about what happened with the dialectics of anti-communist activists and former communists in Poland and in East Central Europe? But there is another tremendously important reason for the coalitions that made the revolution to fall apart once the goal that kept them together has been reached.

Once that purpose mostly, getting rid of an arrangement or of a person which many groups in society, though for widely diverse reasons, consider ofending has been achieved, there is no more reason to stay together and cooperate.

Ater all, other power relations determine the course of events ater the initial casus belli has disappeared, then those which brought together the ready-for-ight coalition.

Kavaliauskas In transitology the magic is regarded as the year of transition from communism to democracy and free market. Along with it we have numerous books on postcommunist transformations.

But could we include to this picture transformations of the former dissidents into public intellectuals? Actually they took top political power. Should we detect here a fruitful analysis for personal identity transformation from being a dissident in dictatorship and becoming a public thinker or speaker in democracy?

What are the consequences of such identity and status transformation? What did these great dissidents lose or gain by becoming political winners? Perhaps it is better to stop at the right moment? Some former dissidents could not ind a place for themselves in new realities and just vanished from public view, being recalled, ever less frequently if at all, during anniversary celebrations only.

Kavaliauskas Adam Michnik is one of the few intellectuals who promote the idea of forgiveness when it comes to the past. His name was Ozjasz Szechter. He was a Jew and a communist, and I am a Pole and an anti-communist.

He was a wise and honest person, and yet he made a bad choice in his life, because communism was a bad choice. It was for communism that he was imprisoned and tortured in pre-war Poland. He spent eight years in prison for communism; I did six years of prison for anti-communism. But I am wondering if those who imprisoned my father and tortured him made a good choice. Knowing how complex East Central European history was, I think this angelic forgiveness is important not only for individual human cases, but also for entire nations, otherwise we may end up with new territorial disputes.

However, human nature is not so angelic. In addition, diferent countries have diferent attitudes towards their historic past and memory politics. Is it possible to create a successful transcultural panEuropean memory politics so that we could end personal quarrel over the soreness of the past? Not necessarily. And besides: what our life, its moral quality and its hospitability to humanity would look like, were they not constantly nudged, critically scrutinized, spurred out of the somnolence of self-contentment, prevented from going astray or returned to senses by utopias?!

Memory is a Siamese twin of oblivion. Memory cannot be but selective. Choosing to remember sins and choosing to eface them from memory are both choices, made with the expected beneits in the mind of the chooser. All too oten, though, calculations of beneits happen to be myopic — whereas 1 Michnik, Adam.

Memory, to cut the long story short, is a mixed blessing. And yet being burdened forever with that ambiguous git we are doomed to make our selections forever and to bear their consequences. In the unavoidable and inescapable eforts to make our selection right and proper, we are alas not assisted by eindeutig, algorithm-style rules. Under such circumstances, we could do much worse than to seek help in the lights of utopian ideals.

Kavaliauskas Transcultural panEuropean memory politics is bad news for nationalistically oriented politicians and historians who understand their national identity on the basis of the past injustice or former imperialistic achievements.

On the other hand, the danger that lurks here is luidity of identity or identity without any spine. A need for belongingness to a particular ethnicity and culture is undeniable. Europe today experiences a big tension between the project of multiculturalism and nationalistic attitudes and even riots.

But is it possible to ind sort of Aristotelian golden mean between interpretative national identity while avoiding prescribed and ixed meanings and a human need for belongingness to a particular state or a nation? If we believe Titus Livius, historian of the rise of the Roman Empire and author of Ab Urbe Condita, the rise of Rome from humble beginnings to ecumenical stature and the glory of a six centuries long Empire, was due to the consistent practice of granting all conquered and annexed peoples full citizenship rights and unqualiied access to the highest oices of the expanding country, while paying due tribute to the gods whom the newcomers worshipped and granting them equal rights on the Roman pantheon.

An outstanding example of an alternative to the Westphalian system was the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, a Polish-Lithuanian state, known for its generosity in granting self-governing powers and independent cultural identities to ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities spread throughout its territory, thereby avoiding bloodshed and other religious atrocities which befell their other, less fortunate neighbours to the West, whose wounds then took centuries to heal.

However, partitions afected by its voracious neighbours — dynastic monarchies of overt or covert national ambitions — dealt a fatal blow to this unique Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Cultural autonomies, fortunate majorities and unfortunate minorities alike, were subjected to forced Russiication in the East, and a no less, perhaps even more ruthless Germanization to the West, supplemented by intermittent religious wars such as the anti-catholic ofensives of Orthodox and Lutheran churches.

Only areas to the South, annexed by a monarchy aspiring to principles close to those of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, escaped a similar fate. History books credit modern history ex post facto with promoting the principles of tolerance, yet there is no doubt that cultural intolerance was an inseparable companion of the two major and tightly intertwined modern endeavours — that of nation building and that of state-building.

Only one great European monarchy, close to the geographical centre of Europe, resisted this popular tendency right up to the breakout of the First World War. And yet even that attempt was narrowed, without much success, to the perimeters of Bosnia — a region of long-lasting peaceful co-existence of many ethnic and religious groups, which nevertheless required a similarly mixed environment to survive.

According to the latest demographic predictions, the numbers of inhabitants of the European Union currently around million are set to shrink in the next ity years to the order of million, which would efectively render obsolete the kind of lifestyles we are accustomed to and are interested in maintaining.

Demographers tell us furthermore, that unless at least 30 million foreigners settle in Europe, the European system will be incapable of surviving. If there is any truth in these predictions, we must prepare ourselves for the possibility of this situation ater we were brought to a boiling point and tragic consequences by the imposition of the principle of ein Volk, ein Reich , which may well emerge in Europe as a whole.

As Europeans, we are already experiencing in practice conditions visualized by Ritter, Bauer and Medem even if, in the shadows cast by the Westphalian settlement, we still ind them inadmissible in theory… T.

Kavaliauskas My next question is an extension of the previous — one of the challenges to construct common multi-narrative European history is that political and cultural identity of East Central European states is constructed around certain political dates in such a way that re-interpretation of them would deconstruct stable, ixed, convenient, traditional self- perception.

For instance, the Baltic States and Russia still compete over May 9th, , interpretation arguing whether it was liberation or occupation. Would You agree that the past haunts present symbolical thinking and stops us from being free to untie nationalistically constructed memory nodes? As all memories are selective, and as selections from the same pool of events may sharply difer, memories serve oten incompatible interests of the selectors. Such clashes between two interpretations, as that concerning the evaluation of the 9th of May , are bound to happen; there is nothing in principle that makes them impossible to happen, nor an obvious, universally acceptable exit from the predicament once they do happen.

One way or the other, this is a long-term prospect, and one controlled and brought about by social and political developments rather than by philosophical analyses and disputes. In the meantime, we need to brace ourselves for the absence of mutually satisfactory solutions. Even less it means that we will… hank you for the conversation. However, in in East Central Europe nationalism had a positive meaning, I think because back then it was romantic and liberal nationalism — for your and my freedom.

Would you agree that in East Central Europeans shared romantic and liberal nationalism that was constructive, not destructive? If so, then perhaps liberalism and nationalism are not necessarily contradictory terms apriori? But is it possible to rehabilitate the positive meaning of it ater harsh ultra-nationalistic riots in Warsaw on November 11th in and in the name of Independence celebration?

It is one of the main political impulses of modernity, a vibrant set of ideas about collective memories, identities, loyalties, anxieties, hopes, aspirations. In its early romantic form, nationalism had a strong emancipatory, universalistic, civic component.

Romantic and liberal nationalism lost ground to its main rival, illiberal nationalism. Instead of rational discourses on civic identities, the new prophets engaged in liturgic, salvationist rodomontades. Liberalism and nationalism are not mutually exclusive. As Israeli political philosopher Yael Tamir argues, liberal nationalism is more than an abstract possibility.

American sociologist Leah Greenfeld, drawing from Isaiah Berlin and Daniel Bell, correctly argues that nationalism is a matter of dignity. But an inlamed, paroxystic sense of dignity can easily turn into paranoia. I think that the ethnic moment is indispensable, traditions cannot and ought not to be erased in the name of disembodied constructs. At the same time, we should be very cautious when national symbols are used in the political battles.

Would you agree that without that we cannot fully grasp the essence and the paradox of liberal nationalism of Central Europe? Would you agree that here we are dealing with the dialectics of intermingled Christianity, conservative ethnocentrism that were reconciled with liberalism of negative and positive freedom in the name of a great political goal? His vision and actions rehabilitated the concept of truth in life, both personal and social.

Solidarity meant that individuals could retrieve their unadulterated self in the autonomous, self-governing social movement from below. Kavaliauskas Continuing the theme of religion and politics, may I ask what was the role of the Romanian Orthodox church in comparison to Poland and Lithuania? Orthodox Church had to come to terms with its own history, both heroic and non-heroic, under communism. On the one hand, the Church was persecuted and sufered enormously.

Second, the Orthodox Church is autocephalous, does not have a supranational authority such as the Pope and Vatican. I am not convinced that the Orthodox Church was the institution to ill the void ater the ideological collapse of communism in Romania. In many respects, as some younger Orthodox thinkers have argued, the Church needs its own aggiornamento.

Kavaliauskas Romania played an important role in stabilizing the war in the former Yugoslavia. Emil Constantinescu is praised in the literature on postcommunist transformations as a leader who helped NATO to end the war. Is this picture correct? And what geopolitical and regional role does Bucharest play today? Perhaps to this question we should also add the question of Moldova — is it perceived as a Romanian younger sister that needs help for the integration into the EU?

He beneited, of course, by at the time powerful national pro-Western sentiment and the warm support from prominent intellectuals, including the Foreign Minister, philosopher and cultural critic Andrei Plesu. Add to this the traditional friendly relations between the Romanian and the Serbian Orthodox Churches.

Constantinescu risked a lot and deserves respect for his principled foreign policy his domestic policy choices were less determined. Relations with Moldova are of course very important, but Romania does not substitute for other countries. It has its own political agenda. Kavaliauskas Are there a few details that illuminate what was behind the scenes that made anti- Basescu coup fail?

Who were the actors and what were their reasons for dissatisfaction with Basescu? In December , President Basescu took the loor in front of the Romanian Parliament and condemned the communist dictatorship in Romania for all its existence, between and , as illegitimate and criminal. He was booed by exponents of the former communist party as well as ultranationalists headed by Corneliu Vadim Tudor, the chair of the Greater Romania Party.

In April , Basescu was impeached. He won a national referendum and returned to the presidential palace. In , during his second mandate, a coalition emerged, formed by ex-communists who call themselves Social Democrats , liberals in fact an opportunistic party that is liberal only in name and some other groups.

Kavaliauskas he term post-communist Europe has not vanished yet, although there are more signs that this term is used less frequently and some authors like Andras Bozoki even argue that post-communism in Central Europe ended in with the enlargement of the EU. What is your comment on the crisis in the Southern Europe? Where is the explanation for crisis there and for stability in Central Europe?

Second, the events in Romania in the summer of suggest that a slide into authoritarianism, or, if you prefer the unravelling of democracy, is not impossible in post-communist Europe, even in countries belonging to NATO and EU. But I agree with political scientist Ken Jowitt who said that inclusion into EU is the best thing that happened to East European countries in the last ive hundred years.

Post-communism is a term with many meanings and connotations. I think of what Havel had in mind when he wrote about the post-communist nightmare: the persistence of a Leninist, exclusive, intolerant, polarizing, mindset, one that divides the world, in a Manichean way, between friends and foes, with no tertium datur. I think of the all- pervasive corruption, clientelism, and cynicism. In this respect, countries like Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain do not have to confront the legacies of Homo Sovieticus.

Yet, Homo Sovieticus was the ofspring of communist civilization. He merged from the ideological project of Bolshevism. His successor, closer to the Greek case, is what Russian sociologist, the late Yuri Levada, identiied as Homo Praevaricatus.

Kavaliauskas Northern Transylvania is vastly Hungarian. Obviously, there are still hot-headed groups, but the mainstream, culturally and politically, is inclined towards dialogue.

Yes, he is now a member of the European Parliament, but no inluential group there has accepted him within its ranks. Kavaliauskas Visiting Bucharest in I had an opportunity to watch on local television an interview with you. I was amazed that during prime time an intellectual could get 3 hours.

Should I conclude that Romanian television is considerably more advanced in terms of promotion of intellectual culture? May I ask how American audience digest communism being equalled to nazism? To what extent would you agree that it is also a cultural and psychological issue — Westerners, who have no experience of Stalinism, are capable of acknowledging the evil of Holocaust but fail to grasp civilizational evil in gulags and Siberia?

Does this problem also lie in the fact that there is European consensus on the evil of Holocaust and extermination of Jewish populations, but there is no consensus on communist Stalinism and genocide of own Russian people, Ukrainians as well as people of the Baltic States?

Ironically, my book came out precisely at the time when Oliver Stone promoted his outrageously revisionist fantasies about the US and the Cold War. I think there is also a deicit of empathy in the West regarding the victims of communism. Adopting an empathetic approach would make less diicult understanding things that Vassili Grossman understood so well: communism not only Stalinism, I hasten to add and fascism or, if you prefer nazism embody the experience of radical evil.

I am among those who refuse to establish a hierarchy of absolute horrors. Evil was evil, no matter what its graphic symbol was, the swastika or the hammer and sickle. Good and evil are not abolished, but falsiied as French historian Alain Besancon showed, it was Russian Christian philosopher Vladimir Soloviev who was probably the irst to diagnose this revolutionizing of morality.

Certainly, the reluctance to condemn communism in as unequivocal terms as fascism is linked to the humanist heredity of Marxism.

Many people still ind hard to admit that the roots of Stalinism should be sought ater the Leninist hubris. Both communism and fascism were redemptive political fantasies. John Paul II supported not only Polish Solidarity, but the Czech dissident movement too, although probably not in the same proportions… he Pope visiting Prague in the Soviet times announced that writers and artists are the conscience of the Czechoslovakia.

Nevertheless, Czech Republic is a deeply atheistic country. So for the majority of Czechs it was a symbol of a protest against the communism, but perhaps not exactly the symbol of a real freedom, because the catholic church is in Czech history very well known as a cruel and oppressive system, full of unfairness till now.

But he was able, as a great man and philosopher, to coordinate all the trends of resistance — i. As an open minded man without preconceived ideas he united all the resistance or almost all. Ater the Velvet Revolution the dissident movement lost the sense, maybe only for a while… His goal was achieved. For many years Havel tried to manage this so called democracy in the new Czech Republic.

Paradoxically, this task seemed to be much more diicult than the leadership of the resistance movement. In fact, there was deep ideological gap between them. On the other side, both of them believed that not only communism in East Central Europe, but also liberal capitalism in the West should be reformed.

Havel and John Paull II represented the idealist position towards the contemporary development in the democratic camp as well. Havel was extremely important for the Czechoslovak and Central European dissident movement as the person that was able to interconnect very diferent ideological positions from reformed communists on the one side to the Pinochet supporters on the other , very diferent path dependencies.

And he was so strong that he brought this very unstable plethora of persons and opinions towards the win in the irst elections in Only ater this event the Civic Forum split. I believe that this was something that created excellent preconditions for the next steps towards democracy with all the problems we could observe not only in the Czech case; and all the important problems were discussed by Havel in the next two decades ater Annus Mirabilis Some artists sought for personal good reputation in his shadow in order to become famous.

And it is very natural to hate the bad conscience, to suppress it in the unconscious. He was ethically too good, too perfect in comparison with the majority of his compatriots… L. Cabada It was a very short period of the irst approximately 2—3 years ater when Havel was generally accepted as the liberator and the irst person of democratic transformation. In other words, they had big diiculties with the consensual version of democracy and tried to apply as much and oten as possible majoritarian approaches.

Klaus in the irst place. I do not evaluate whether he was or was not correct, but only the impact of such steps on the popular mood and public opinion. Kavaliauskas It is interesting that Havel even serving as top politician — the President — managed to remain authentic, maintained his image of an underground intellectual, what I mean is that when the Rolling Stones with Mike Jagger came to perform a concert in Prague, Havel in front of cameras had a shot of a drink sitting with the spectators, dressed up in a leather jacket.

When Bill Clinton arrived, they both performed at a jazz evening. It is available in Czech documentary. Can we say that he was an artist and a politician in one? We know that oten people change since they become politicians and get power in oice, they tend to pretend to be someone else.

Should we say that Havel was an exception to the rule? For us, artists and intellectuals, it was a big loss, but for him it was necessary to stop and relax. Cabada Yes, I agree, it was already mentioned in my irst answer that Havel came from the libertarian dissent on the Prague castle and tried to stay as authentic as possible.

Nevertheless, quite soon, with advises and sometimes also under the pressure of his co-workers, Havel changed the habits at least in the public space. Nevertheless, Havel tried to stay as informal and authentic as possible — and important role in this process played his irst wife Olga.

To live in a lie meant to pretend that you do not pretend under communist ideology that suppressed freedom of speech. I say to myself that it is a gentle way of ridiculing myself. For that matter, Havel wrote in one of his articles for Radio Free Europe, that a communist staf leader has many of similar features with a head of capitalist management group. But when living in so called democracy, we have at least the possibility to disagree in public.

Our responsibility is examined every day, if we are in the post of high crucial decisions, as Havel was. Kavaliauskas Now let us travel a bit back in time and talk about paradigmatic Paris in contrast to Prague And at what cost?
