This uses hydraulic bump stops at both ends, but for different reasons. This set-up has a good effect on handling, clearly, but it is at the expense of ride quality more solid than supple. You can spec adaptive dampers, but our experience of these so far has been limited to a millpond-smooth FIA racing circuit…. In a word, yes. The four-cylinder is a lighter lump, meaning it feels dartier, and of course it sounds far better than the BMW d oil-burner tested above.
It has a relatively linear power delivery for a turbo motor, and actually sounds pretty interesting — particularly in the Sport drive mode that winds up engine and gearbox responses. Munich claims mph in just 4. It feels this rapid on the road, with instant shove at any road speed. This makes sense when you see the set-square flat torque curve that stretches peak pulling power from a lowly rpm to a rather busier rpm. The eight-speed auto is a familiar, and fine, way to slush through your gearchanges in day-to-day driving: oleaginous and treacly smooth around town or on a motorway schlep, eager to fire home the next cog if you up the ante and set the Three on tiptoes in Sport mode.
And, yes, you can finger-tap through the gears by paddle if you want to play F1 driver on your favourite back road. Traction is simply not an issue in the dry, although those upgraded inch tyres will chirrup on damp roads, despite the addition of the M Sport differential, which progressively locks to shuffle drive from side to side on the rear axle.
We predict some head-scratching at Audi while they try to figure out how to fire back…. The d is likely to remain Britain's best-seller and it's a polished, accomplished all-rounder for many users. The junior M car shares everything that makes the 3-series so damn good that it walked our mega-test against every which rival. We happen to think iDrive might be the best multi-controller around.
Read our full review on the BMW 3 Series. Revised proportions, wider track, longer wheelbase, reduced weight and drag. New design language focuses on clean, precise lines to emphasise superior driving dynamics. New range of standard options for instrument panel and centre console, as well as revised leather steering wheels. BMW e iPerformance model with plug-in hybrid drive available.
The BMW 3 Series Saloon has had an unparalleled reputation both for its quality, and supreme handling in the premium midsize segment for more than 40 years and this, the seventh generation, raises the bar even higher. The saloon is the core of BMW 3 Series range of which over 15 million units have been sold worldwide and is regarded as the heartbeat of the BMW brand. With revised styling, superior driving dynamics, exceptional efficiency and innovative features, this latest iteration opens an exciting new chapter in 3 Series progression.
Exterior design Precision, clean lines and bold contours are the hallmarks of the new 3 Series Saloon, which has had its proportions radically revised. The new car is 85 millimetres longer than its predecessor at 4,mm , 16 millimetres wider 1,mm and just 1 mm taller 1, millimetres.
Added to that, its wheelbase has been extended by 41 millimetres to 2,mm, as has its track widths front: by 43mm, and rear by 21mm. At the front, the large BMW kidney grille elements are framed by a single surround and split up by wide bars and link to the headlight units. The customary BMW twin headlights feature the familiar two-way split that is further emphasised by an eye-catching notch in the front apron that rises into the headlight contour.
The bonnet has four contour lines leading to the BMW kidney grille. At its leading edge, it sits flush with the upper edge of the headlights and kidney grille. Both the front foglights and the Air Curtains are integrated into the outer air intakes, which are inserted into the front apron in a horizontal T shape on SE and Sport models.
This design was originally developed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics NACA for the intake air in jet engines and later became a feature of classical racing cars. A pair of character lines rise to the rear of the car at door-handle level and a contour line near the side skirts guides the eye to the sculpted rear wheel arches.
Surface contours lead into the rear apron from the side skirts and extend in an upwards movement via the rear lights up to the spoiler lip on the boot lid. At the rear slim, darkened light units house L-shaped taillights. From launch, customers can choose from two non-metallic colours and ten metallic shades including the brand new Portimao Blue metallic which is unique to the top-selling M Sport model. Interior The interior is designed to accentuate the spaciousness of the cabin and the driver- focused cockpit.
The instrument panel has a modern, light look with horizontal lines, high- quality electroplated trim strips and contours that extend into the doors. The newly-designed instrument cluster and Control Display form a large surfaced screen grouping, while the controls not included in these units are arranged into clearly structured function panels. Displays and buttons for the air conditioning are at the centre of the instrument panel while the light functions are operated via a panel of buttons next to the steering wheel.
The range of standard and optional interior trim elements available for the instrument panel and centre console is almost entirely new. Increased standard equipment The entry level SE model features substantially increased standard specification. It includes Extended LED headlights with cornering light and eyebrow indicators, BMW Light Carpet, interior Ambient Lighting with up to 11 colour settings, reversing camera and latest generation reversing assistant, electric folding rear view mirrors, three-zone air conditioning and enhanced acoustic glazing.
All 3 Series models benefit from split folding rear seats and folding rear headrests as standard. The SE models get line-specific front and rear bumper design, and they also come with exclusive inchlight-alloy wheels or optional inch wheels, bespoke door sill strips and LED front foglights. The Sport model adds exterior features including BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim for the side window surrounds, plus kidney grille bars and trim elements for the air intakes and rear apron in High-gloss Black.
The Sport model now comes equipped with inch alloy wheels, Vernasca leather seats and also driver and passenger heated seats. The M Sport model features particularly large air intakes as well as a different design for the front bumper, side skirts and rear apron. Inside there are Sports seats, an M leather steering wheel, an anthracite-coloured BMW Individual headliner and interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon, updated Vernasca leather seat trims and heated front seats.
The 3 Series Saloon will feature a new- generation six-speed manual gearbox and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. It now includes multi-stage turbocharging, which brings increased efficiency across all engine speeds. The revised diesel has a maximum output of hp and a peak torque of Nm enabling the BMW d to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 7. Average fuel consumption is An addition, overall body rigidity is up by some 25 per cent, rising to as much as 50 per cent in certain areas, while the suspension spring rate is up by some 20 per cent over the previous-generation.
The body itself is 20kg lighter, while aluminium front spring struts and engine subframe have cut 7. A further weight saving of almost 15kig is due to the use of aluminium for the bonnet and front side panels. Aerodynamic improvements have also been applied.
The drag coefficient Cd of the BMW d, for example, has been reduced from 0. Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers For M Sport models, as an alternative to the M Sport suspension customers can specify Adaptive M suspension that now results in a perceptible variation in the damping characteristics when switching between the driving modes using the Driving Experience Control switch. Both the BMW d and BMW d xDrive SE models are equipped as standard with inch light-alloy wheels while the Sport and M Sport models feature unique inch wheel designs and optional inch light-alloy wheels are available - as are high performance tyres.
These lightweight model-specific brake discs have a grey cast iron friction ring with an aluminium brake disc chamber, while the blue-painted callipers feature the M logo. The M Sport brakes are included within all i M Sport models. The Performance Control function is also standard. This system improves agility by varying the drive torque through the rear wheels depending on conditions. The electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the rear differential helps to enhance traction, agility and cornering.
Interior and equipment The cabin has been improved to maximise driver focus while offering more space and increased comfort. Shoulder room in the front of the cabin has also increased, and passengers in the rear benefit from more legroom. The distance between the front and rear seats has been extended by 11 millimetres, and all occupants have more headroom.
Getting in and out of the car is easier for the rear passengers because the door aperture height has been increased. Not a bit of it. There's a new life and sharpness to the powertrains, and the handling is tighter than ever. Yet it's also quiet and refined. The hygiene factors are all there in abundance too. It's good to sit in, roomy enough, well-equipped and not costly to own.

But climb aboard and we were astonished at the cabin refinement BMW has built in here — an acoustic windscreen and odd-looking foam-filled window shut covers are standard-fit on all 3-series, and do a fabulous job of keeping unwanted noise out of the car. Off out for a spin and this 2. Its mph time of 6. We did think the transmission in particular was impressive in its mapping, however.
Cog swaps occur quickly and seriously smoothly, and the manual control using paddles works seamlessly. If, like me, you value discretion and restraint in this ever-louder age of Generation Flaunt, this car takes on extra appeal. The Mi xDrive looks pleasingly under-the-radar as we spy it under harsh strip lights in the Garching lock-up outside Munich for an early drive — there are no wild spoilers or wings or skirts here.
Just a more muscular front air dam, blue flashes marking the four-piston brake calipers grabbing engorged discs, and chunky twin rear exhausts. If the exterior is a model of moderation, the oily bits are a little more ambitious. Top Trumps bragging rights? A wholesome bhp and a matching torque figure in good old-fashioned pounds feet. Without the bothersome bodykit of a full M car, little bro can mooch around all day with something of a laidback, mini Q-car vibe. It has a certain US-centric quality to it.
A nice discreet matt black or repmobile chrome would do just fine for our Q car mores. The steering is lighter in resistance, but also far sharper and that makes it easier to place on the road. Munich claims up to 55kg of weight has been shed, and this coupled with nimbler control weights lends the new 3-series a new-found agility. This uses hydraulic bump stops at both ends, but for different reasons. This set-up has a good effect on handling, clearly, but it is at the expense of ride quality more solid than supple.

Sport adds high-gloss trim for the window surrounds, grille and rear bumper elements, plus unique inch alloys and a sporty interior with black trim, heated sports seats in the front and standard leather upholstery.
Top-of-the-range M Sport gets a front bumper with large air intakes, plus unique side skirts and rear bumper, along with the same dark high-gloss trim pieces as found on the Sport. The interior gets heated sports seats, an M-badged leather steering wheel and full leather upholstery, plus a darker headlining for a sportier interior ambience. The M-Sport also benefits from M Sport cars come as standard with sports suspension, but this can be replaced by optional Adaptive M suspension, which brings a number of selectable modes to adjust its behaviour for different road surfaces and driving styles.
This suspension is also included as part of the M Sport Plus package, which can be specified on some non-M Sport models, too, bringing larger brakes, inch wheels, and a number of styling tweaks along with it.
